Season briefing · reviewed October 15

The October 6–13 Countdown Surge has ended. Expertise Surge is announced for October 20–27: double upgrade materials from all sources. This does not confirm doubled Proficiency donations; keep the calculator at 1× unless the bench confirms otherwise.

Three numbers, three different jobs

Proficiency: 0–10. Item types, brands, sets, and skill variants earn ranks through equipped combat use or donations. Every new rank contributes to account Expertise. At 10, that entry is Proficient and stops adding ranks.

Account Expertise: your upgrade ceiling. This is the account level you are raising toward 30. You earn ranks across many entries; you do not need every item in the game fully Proficient to reach the capped level.

Item Expertise: paid upgrades. After an entry is Proficient, spend materials to upgrade a particular piece, up to your account ceiling. This spending does not raise account Expertise. [4]

02 / YOUR MAIN METHOD

Challenging Countdown, on repeat.

A practical default while common entries remain: a reliable fighting build, targeted loot with many unfinished entries, and donations after every run. Include queues and sorting when comparing ranks per hour. This is a route recommendation, not a measured fastest clear on your account. [5]

1

Choose loot that can still earn ranks

Weapons and named gear are efficient direct donations. Common armor also helps, especially alongside wearing that brand or set, but needs more copies to complete through donation alone. Farm a category with many unfinished models rather than repeatedly targeting a favorite that is already Proficient. Check individual variants: two similarly named guns can have separate entries.

2

Matchmake on Challenging and extract

Follow the group, complete objectives, collect drops, and finish extraction. Challenging is the default because donation value does not require god rolls. A slower or failed Heroic run is a poor trade for this goal. If your actual group clears Heroic more efficiently, compare it in the session tracker rather than assuming either mode always wins.

3

Use this exact sorting order

Keep/favorite → extract valuable library upgrades → donate junk to Expertise → deconstruct or sell the remainder. Protect future builds and keep one useful copy of rare named/exotic drops. Extract only worthwhile library improvements so sorting stays short. Ordinary deconstruction alone gives materials; it does not directly give matching item Proficiency.

4

Donate before the next run

Open Tinkering → Expertise → Donate All Junk. The main-menu action routes eligible junk to matching entries. Check what remains: it may already be Proficient, ineligible, or still worth keeping. Deconstruct leftovers for materials, or sell them if you are specifically funding duplicate purchases. [6]

5

Spend requisition to solve the next bottleneck

Named Item Caches help while your missing named pool is broad. When duplicates mostly hit entries already Proficient, random caches become a weaker use of time; switch to targeted purchases, owned recipes, passive leveling, and materials. Exotic Caches help find missing exotics and provide components from unwanted duplicates for the eventual paid upgrades. Keep useful exotics; avoid donating them as ordinary junk. [7]

Need a stronger farming build first?

Our latest progression review starts with a usable Umbra loadout, then collects shared pieces. Do not hold up every other target while chasing a perfect roll or an Exotic.

  1. Umbra Initiative: four usable pieces, including chest and backpack, for a coherent damage-and-recovery loop.
  2. Česká knees and a working primary: use a gun you can clear with; St. Elmo is an upgrade goal, not an entry requirement.
  3. Shared upgrades: keep useful GR9 variants, brand pieces and Exotic gloves while rotating targets. Favorite these before donating anything.
  4. Return to missing entries: once the build works, target the categories with the most unfinished models.

This is the October 14 farming-plan recommendation. It does not establish a universal DPS winner or require replacing a farming build that already works.

03 / EARN TWO WAYS AT ONCE

Rotate equipment without losing clear speed.

Equipped gear earns Proficiency from kill XP, and multiple pieces of the same ordinary brand or gear set increase that entry's progress. Named/exotic pieces have their own entries. You can earn through combat and donate toward the same entry; stop putting resources into it once it reaches rank 10. [4]

Keep your farming loadout functional
SlotRecommended approachWhen to keep it fixed
Main weaponKeep a strong weapon. Train an unfinished model here only when it still clears efficiently.Damage loss makes the entire run slower.
SecondaryTrain a useful unfinished weapon that preserves your talent setup.Tinkerer needs two ordinary, non-Named, non-Exotic weapons of the same type. A random training weapon can disable it. [8]
PistolEquip an unfinished sidearm; replace it at rank 10.Keep your usual sidearm if its utility is needed.
SkillsRotate useful variants: revive, foam, pulse, healing, or shield variants you can actually use.Keep the skill that makes your build survive. Avoid deploying hackable damage skills around Countdown Hunters.
ArmorWear a coherent unfinished set/brand when you have a viable farming loadout for it.Keep the four-piece bonus and key talents of your working farming build intact.
SpecializationTrain an unfinished specialization weapon when its specialization still fits.Keep Technician if you rely on its laser/skill tier; donate materials to the other entries instead.

Using equipped items, passive slot rotation, and material donations for awkward slots follows the same approach described in community Countdown leveling advice. Your guide prioritizes successful clears over equipping six unrelated training pieces. [9]

The useful rule

Once your current build is Proficient, it can still farm all the donations you need. You can keep Heartbreaker, Umbra, or your other working build and progress by donating different loot. Change a slot only when the extra passive ranks outweigh the lost farming speed.

04 / FOLLOW THE GAPS, NOT A FIXED LEVEL

Change methods when donation returns fall.

The level boundaries vary with what you have already played. Use the remaining Expertise entries and the last few runs to decide your next phase.

What is unfinished?Best next actionSwitch signal
Many ordinary weapons, brands, and setsTarget categories with many unfinished entries. Donate weapons; wear useful unfinished armor alongside it.Most of that category's drops no longer donate successfully.
Several named items and specific modelsCheck vendors and owned crafting recipes. Buy/craft only matching missing copies, donate, and stop at rank 10. Keep opening named caches while the remaining pool is broad.Random loot mostly gives Proficient duplicates and only a few particular entries remain.
Rare exotics, unavailable named items, skillsEquip the useful ones you own. Spend spare materials on entries you cannot efficiently obtain or use. Target Gear Mods for Printer Filament when direct item donations dry up.Material donation earns more ranks per hour than your direct-loot route.
Almost at 30Finish the cheapest remaining ranks. Partial progress counts; top off near-complete entries or use materials on the easiest unfilled entries.Your account Expertise reaches 30. Stop grinding unrelated entries for this objective.

Targeting mods, buying named copies, and donating materials to unavailable items are common ways players finish after exhausting ordinary gear. [7] The phase order here is a recommendation; the switch point comes from your actual results.

Quick ranks you may have overlooked
  • Sidearms, specialization weapons, and individual skill variants.
  • Different ordinary weapon models within the same category.
  • Named gear, which earns separately from its parent brand.
  • Owned recipes for missing named weapons or gear.
  • Improvised armor: inspect the Expertise menu for the separate slot entries, then use only available recipes if the material cost is worthwhile.

Community completion reports specifically call out crafting missing named items and Improvised gear. Check your own menu and recipes before committing materials; do not spend time chasing a rare blueprint if materials can finish the same ranks faster. [10]

Your default decision

Stay on direct donations while common gaps are plentiful. Gear-Mod farming is a finishing tool, not the automatic first step while ordinary gaps are plentiful. Do not grind hundreds of exotic drops when donated materials can research the entry without owning it.

05 / KEEP THE CONVERSION FUNDED

Use cheap progress. Bank expensive upgrades.

Do now

  • Buy useful duplicates from vendors. If a missing weapon or named item is on sale, direct purchases remove drop RNG. Buy only what remains to finish it.
  • Donate materials near their caps. Keep enough for repairs, useful crafting, and your chosen item upgrades; spend the surplus on hard-to-level entries.
  • Deconstruct unwanted mods for filament. This provides a predictable material for whichever missing entry you choose.
  • Use visible Priority Objective rewards. A short objective with a large filament/material payout may beat a mod-farming run. Compare payout and completion time.

Targeted donations and material rewards are supported by player completion reports. The guide does not assume a specific Priority Objective reward is currently available. [11]

Save for the finish

  • Exotic Components. Keep your first useful copy, then deconstruct unwanted duplicates rather than feeding them to item Proficiency.
  • Field Recon Data and SHD Calibration. These are needed for higher paid Expertise grades.
  • Your chosen item's crafting materials. Its bench preview tells you the relevant recipe.
  • Prototype Cores. Converting one eligible item costs one. Save additional cores for its augment later. [2]

For account-level speed, avoid spreading paid Expertise upgrades across temporary farming equipment. Upgrade your main weapon early only if the clear-speed improvement earns back the spent resources.

SHD points, credits, and repeat-character leveling

Use scavenging points you already have as a supplement. At the original SHD 200 starting point, repeat-character leveling did not offer the large accumulated point pool behind high-SHD shortcut videos. If your watch is now much higher, compare the usable points and full leveling time against your own farming rate. There is no universal SHD break-even assumed here. [12]

If you have spare credits, buy vendor mods and deconstruct them for filament, or buy matching named/weapon duplicates. If you are converting watch points into materials, compare the current in-game yield for direct filament against credits → vendor mods → deconstruction. Events and watch changes can alter the winner; older fixed conversion ratios are unreliable. [10]

Need ceramics for the upgrade budget?

Check already-earned watch Scavenging points before adding another farming detour. For a container run, sweep Solar Farm and the surrounding East Mall area. Capture the control point if needed, supply its officer for resource highlighting, then collect the nearby material containers.

Our October 12 review of the local loot tables confirmed ceramics in gear-material containers. Solar Farm is a practical density recommendation; we have not measured it as the fastest ceramics route. Check current watch yields and the item's bench recipe before spending.

If matchmaking is poor or you want to farm solo

Use targeted loot in Summit, or an efficient Retaliation/open-world route you can clear reliably. Choose actual ranks and useful materials per hour over the activity label. Keep the same donation and rotation loop. A guaranteed quick clear beats repeated wipes or a long queue. Alternate routes are backups until your own tracker shows they outperform Countdown. [13]

06 / PLAN A SINGLE ENTRY

Donation calculator.

Estimate what remains to make one entry Proficient. This is a resource estimate, not a calculation of account levels or time to 30.

Where is that entry now?

Use the Proficiency bar, not the item's paid Expertise grade. A general XP, Season Pass XP, requisition, or upgrade-material event does not establish a Proficiency donation multiplier. Check the live donation preview.

10 ranks remaining

20weapon / named-gear copies
100ordinary brand/set pieces
3,000Printer Filament

Your entered filament covers 0 of the 10 remaining ranks.

Planning baselines: two weapon/named-gear copies per rank; ten ordinary armor pieces per rank; about 300 filament per rank in 30-filament batches. Donations may finish partway through a rank; batches round upward. These retained community baselines are estimates. Calibrate them below if your live bench differs. [14] [15]

Calibrate estimates to your bench

Enter normal-rate costs for one full rank. The confirmed multiplier above divides these costs; do not enter already-boosted rates as well.

Why target weapons early?

Under the normal baseline, 20 matching weapon donations can complete an entry, compared with 100 ordinary brand/set pieces. That is five times the rank value per donated piece under those default costs. Drop frequency, how many unfinished models remain, passive armor XP, and your clear speed still decide the best farming category.

07 / MEASURE YOUR OWN FASTEST ROUTE

Track ranks per hour.

Include matchmaking, combat, sorting, and donations. Compare similar sessions. Small samples and mixed passive/donation gains can vary; use several runs before changing your main method.

Log a session

Count gains across trained/donated entries: one entry from rank 0 → 10 = 10 ranks; another from rank 4 → 7 = 3. Account level increases have different thresholds, so do not log “one Expertise level” as one rank.

08 / CROSS THE FINISH LINE

Account 30 unlocks the ceiling.
Your item still needs upgrading.

I want a usable Prototype

Earn a drop or cache.

Play a reliably clearable Escalation tier and use its requisition vendor. This obtains a random eligible item; it does not guarantee the exact base, rolls or augment you want.

Since October 13, entry checks your token balance without spending it. Keep enough tokens for your desired tier when buying caches: Tier 1 needs 1, Tier 5 needs 5, Tier 10 needs 10. Hosts and teammates now earn equal completion tokens. Official update →

I want this specific keeper

Research, upgrade, convert.

Reach account 30, finish the item’s paid grade 30, finalize its core, attributes and talent, then convert it with one Prototype Core. Conversion still rolls Prototype results; it does not guarantee every attribute at the new maximum.

Prototype drops are a useful parallel route. They do not remove the upgrade requirements for converting your own ordinary item.

01

Account Expertise 30

Earn the required ranks across equipment entries. This is the grind covered above.

02

Item Expertise 30

Make its entry Proficient, then pay the individual item's upgrade recipes through grade 30.

03

Convert in Protolab

Finalize the level-40 item, unequip it, and spend one Prototype Core.

Budget for one keeper

Use the chosen item’s live bench recipes for its remaining paid grades. Bank Exotic Components, Field Recon Data, SHD Calibration, and the ordinary materials it asks for. Different item categories and existing grades change what you still need.

Collect those materials alongside the account grind. Prioritize one item you will keep instead of upgrading every training piece.

Finalize before converting

Recalibrate the core, attribute types, or talent you want first. Optimization is not required: conversion scales attributes as though the item had been fully optimized. After conversion you cannot recalibrate or optimize the base item under the rules checked for this guide. Exotics are excluded, so Tinkerer itself cannot be converted. [2]

If conversion is greyed out, unequip the item. Confirm you are checking its paid Expertise grade, not Proficiency rank 10 or only your account level. [17]

First conversion checklist

Faster access to a Prototype while you work toward 30

Matchmake or play with a capable group in Escalation at a tier you can clear reliably. Prototype items can drop directly. Spend earned Escalation Tokens at the Base of Operations vendor beside the Escalation panel; its random cache is always available, and gear/weapon caches rotate daily. The vendor is available to level-40 agents. No account Expertise 30 is required to obtain these caches. [3]

Keep drops that already fit your build. You cannot rely on recalibrating a blue Heartbreaker Prototype into a red-core piece later. Converting a pre-recalibrated ordinary piece is how you preserve a specific desired core. The fastest Prototype-drop route and the fastest route to account Expertise 30 are different tasks; pick the one that solves your immediate need.
